92.Q is very active within the Nashville community. Often, I see the stations van outside most of the event that have taken place down here. They were involved in the rebuilding of Nashville's community when the flood came last year, blood drive, MLK walk, TSU homecoming, and more. The station targets mainly black communities in Nashville from all ages. I strongly believe that this station is committed to the public's interest. Not only is it a station that plays good music, but it is a station that to make a difference.

People Magazine

The magazine that I chose to report was People Magazine. Now, I hardly even buy this magazine because of all of the pictures of celebrities just thrown randomly on the pages. I don't like that at all. All of the news featured in the magazine evolved around celebrities and their every day lives. I read in one of the articles that Cameron Diaz bought marijuana from notorious rapper Snoop Dogg. (What a big surprise..) None of the news caught my attention because they were all based on famous people lives. I already have enough problems in my own life, I don't need to read about stupid junk about celebrities and them being either too drunk, high, flirtatious toward American Idol contestants, or their newborns! Most of the photos included again, famous people. If they weren't seen outside their homes, they were on the red carpet. If not that, they were shopping or spotted outside a restaurant. They also had some pictures of the latest styles worn by celebrities and usually advertised where you could get the same cloths for less. Other ads include more sells of People Magazine, social network ads, cleansing products, and fashion. Some of the ad images were similar to the photos that you would see throughout the magazine. I this was their way of selling the product. I feel that People magazine was made to target an audience between the ages of 16-21, maybe 25. The whole make of the magazine appeals to the younger youth because they know that around this age young adults are concern about their image. That's explains why most of the advertisement was fashion or trend related.
Major Companies that stood out to me that Time Warner owns: HBO, HBO On Demand, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network (I still love Tom & Jerry)CNN, Fashion Tv, and CW Network.

Major Companines that stood out to me that News Corp owns: Just about anything that involves Fox Entertainment, several local news stations in various cities, New York Post, Myspace.com, AmericanIdol.com, and Wall Street Journal.

Major Companies that stood out to me that Disney owns: ESPN, several local Radio Stations, Global Children's Magazines, and ABC Studios

I notice that Time Warner has the most synergy forms than the other corporate firms. The network and cabel system had the most extensive synergy when it came to this firm. Many of its corporations were merged with countries outside of the states. For example: HBO has a network that is internatioally known. HBO Latin America, HBO Central Europe and so on...
News Corporation owned many local television and radio stations.
Disney owned many network stations and film annd theater.
All three stations owned many television or radio stations. Many of them are spreaded throughout the world. Major coroporations such as these and its many synergy forms creates more media content that is known, in most cases, globally. I feel that synergy can result in over exposure of media because there are many firms within the corporation which can be a little repetitive sometimes. You can find most of the content in other forms of media owned by the corportation, but I know they do this just to increase their revenue. I feel that it can be both a good thing and bad thing. I feel that these other forms of media can be a bit much when it comes to the content, however it is needed because corporations cannot function in large media. I feel that it would be chaos if they were to operate like this. Breaking it down to smaller firm is, although I hate to say it, better for the business while increasing growth.

The News

The most recent news stories from Western include: WKU to announce research partnership at Owensboro facility, Mental health conference Feb. 4, and View from the Hill – Moving into Gary A. Ransdell Hall.
If you keep researching the types of news stories Western covers, most of them deals with Presidents, executives, or some director over a particular board. I do not know how I would label these stories as "hard" or "soft". I do believe that WKU news greatly effects the local news in Bowling Green. Since Bowling Green is a small city their news alone would not be enough media to gain readers attention. With Western being a nice size campus, Bowling Green can attract people with it's entertainment and news. It gives journalist in the city something to report while keeping the readers aware of the news going on in Bowling Green and WKU.

The Tactics of Advertisment

While watching my favorite show, Real Housewives of Atlanta, I notice one particular commercial that stood out from all the rest. This commercial was for the new 2011 Toyota Highlander. I'm pretty sure you all have seen the commercial. You know the kid is in the back of the car, painfully listening to his parents singing their old jams, while his friend pulls up beside them at a stop light enjoying his new T.V. system installed in their car, the Toyota Highlander. Basically, the commercial was trying to say that their car was better than others due the "sweet rear seat entertainment system" as the little boy quotes. If it was not the Highlander commercial, it was the IPAD commercial. I will admit, they have catchy tune that sticks in your head. (I often find myself singing with the tune when it comes on.) This commercial shows the special affects of the new I-pad. When it comes to the car commercial, they are trying to sell their product by the features that comes along with the car. I feel that this is not a good way to sell the product because it does not show how safe the car can be in accidental situations. It focuses on the a particular special feature, such as the rear seat entertainment system and draws away from important facts such as millage, safety, and how well it drives. These are all things that an informed customer would want to know. As far as the I-pad commerical, bravo with it's sell tactics. They show the important features that the I-pad can perform while adding a catchy tune! Ok so the catchy tune part is not important, but it is a plus.

1. The Social Network 2. The Eclipse (Twilight Series)
3. Eat Pray Love 4. Alice and Wonderland
5. Dear John 6. Tangled
7. Harry Potter 8. Shutter's Island
9. Last Song 10. Color Girls

The Social Network- was inspired by entrepreneur and Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg.
The Eclipse- was orginally a popular book among young adults and teens that was inspired into a movie.
Eat Pray Love- a book made into a movie.
Alice and Wonderland- a remake of a popular children's film.
Dear John- a sappy love romantic book that tells the tale of a woman who falls in love with a army Sargent shortly before 9/11. This book was made into a movie.
Tangled- a children's book or tale about a princess who was trapped in the tower for years until her prince came to save her. Although Tangle is a little different from the original story, the movie storyline is based off of the popular kid's novel.
Harry Potter- Popular kid's book that was made into a series of movies.
Shutter's Island- based off of a novel.
Last Song- book was released last year however the movie rights were sold before book was written.
Color Girls- based off of a book.

From the results, most popular books are made into movies. Some of the books I have not heard of, however film makers continue to use its storyline in order to make the film. Some of the movies I listed above, did not even have a book or novel. Ex: The Social Network was a movie based off of Mark Zuckerberg's copyright struggles of Facebook. This shows me that if you have an interesting life story, that it guarantees the chances of it being made into a movie. I believe that books that are made into movies increases the chances of people reading the actual book if someone told them that the book was better than the movie. That would spark their curiosity and make them purchase the book. Also, I think that books that are eventually made into movies, are a great for the publishers because it's a form of advertisement. If someone has never heard of an authors book, but they watch the movie it can motivate them to get the book and read it for themselves.

Essence vs. Ebony

Aside from the fact that it is my favorite magazine, Essence is one of the most popular African American magazines of today. Essences mainly targets African American women with topics that talk cover health, sex, fashion, cosmetics, relationships, politics, education, and even the latest hairstyles. A lot a content for a magazine huh? Well that's why I love it! Now let's compare Essences to Ebony, another popular black magazine. Ebony covers roughly the same topics. Both of the magazine content are similar with, in most cases, corresponding ads that follows after the topic. For example: In Essences magazine, there was an article that acknowledge black woman's power as parents, entrepreneurs, and teachers/coaches. The following page was an advertisement of the cleaning cleanser, Pin-Sol and guess what the slogan was...The POWERFUL scent of clean. Not every article had a similar ad that followed in the magazines. Other ads were of restaurants, fashion, hair products, and more. I feel that in both magazines the ads and editorial content balance out each other wonderfully. The ads compliment the articles and magazines as a unit.

Newspaper

I am a proud Nashville native, so my local newspaper is The Tennessean. I will admit, I am not big on reading the Tennessean newspaper. I prefer to listen to the news on the local news station. I feel that Nashville's local newspaper has transitioned smoothly into the digital era. You are able to find all types of news from local to national here on Tennessean.com. It is more advertisement on the website than in the newspaper. I also noticed that advertisement in the newspaper is based locally within the Nashville areas than on the website. So far I have not had any complaints on the content of the Tennessean and with me not being a regular reader of the newspaper, I sure enough do not have any complaints either. In my opinion, I find it easier to go on the website and read the news online.

The Karate Kid

The only movie that came to my mind when it comes to foreign U.S. films was the Karate Kid starring Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, and Taraji Haden. As you can see, I am not a big movie buff...The Karate Kid is all about a black family, a single mother and her son, moving and living in China. This film capture China's culture by showing shots like: the busy streets of China, The Great Wall of China, and it's schools. Dre, the character played by Jaden Smith, must now experience his new life living in a country that he is unfamiliar with.
In this scenario, Dre is the foreigner. He now haves to learn how to adapt to the Chinese culture. He immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying -and the feeling is mutual- but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. On top of Dre was being bullied by one of his classmates, Cheng. The narrator wanted to portray Dre as an outcast into this new culture. Aside from trying to find ways to defend himself, Dre is trying to find out how "to fit in" or adjust to the Chinese environment. With the help of Mr. Han, played by Jackie Chan, Dre learns to defend himself against the bullies and gain his friendship back with classmate Mei Ying.
As stated earlier, Jaden makes a friend with Mei Ying, however her family does not allow them to play together because of their "differences." When Mei Ying's parents found out that Dre was a young black male who attends her school, they were strongly against their friendship and forbid them from hanging out with each other. They looked at Dre as a threat towards their daughter.
In most American films, foreigners are misunderstood at first. The Karate Kid is a perfect example of this. Society view them as one way when really they are just trying to make it in everyday life like everyone else. Now and days foreign actors play both "good" and "bad" roles. To me this is great for American film today because it shows diversity not only within the characters but in the American society.

The Today Show and The Colbert Report

Satirical news such as "The Today Show" and "The Colbert Report" helps us understand the world by using comedy and humor. As I clicked on the link to the website, it was my first time seeing these two shows and interact with their audience by cracking jokes on political and entertainment news. I must say that it was a little entertaining.
Both shows cover broad areas of entertainment and news. Everything ranging from political views to celebrity entertainment. In order to see if the news was creditable, I Google some of the topics the discuss. "The Today Show," said something about the republicans retaking office in the white house. Sure enough I found that the republicans did reclaim their position in the white house. I will admit, I was a little discourage because I am a proud democrat.
Now, broadcasting has went from being the "serious" local and cable news to hilarious comedy news. I think people are tired of hearing news the old fashion way-which is serious without cracking a smile to assure that everything will be alright. So people add humor in today's news to lighten up the mood of America.
I believe that this new broadcasting of entertainment is expressing what people today really thinks of our government. I notice that they use inappropriate and provocative words that people are really thinking in their mind. It sounds crazy but the way they word news is probably what society thinks about a certain situation. Is that better than the internet or print news? To be honest I cannot give you an answer on that one.

In the Words of Tiffany

I feel that this blog will be different from most because I interviewed my cousin who is 33 years old. Not too old. Either way, it will have to do. My cousin, Tiffany, talk to me about her experience with television growing up.
The most frustrating part of this interview was having her describe the impact of television on her life. She did not have much to say about that. Tiff later on explained how and why her attitude towards television has changed. One thing that she talks about were the number of family shows TV had back in the day. Some examples that she gave were shows like The Cosby's and Sanford&Son. "These shows taught the importance of family and values and you do not see shows like that anymore today." Some of her favorite shows are on network ABC. "I like Extreme Home Makeover because it takes a negative situation and transforms it into a positive one. People need to see that more these days. Bravo and TV One are my favorite networks on cable."
"Some experiences that that I remember relates to politics and news. When Obama won the 2008 election and the disaster of Hurricane Katrina" Tiffany says.
We have recently learned that when cable was created, the top network stations that broadcast news such as NBC, ABC, and CBS ratings began to decrease. I reference this experience with news stations today and asked Tiff which one does she prefer: Cable news or Network News? "Network news display more local news while cable addresses a broader range of news, like regional and national. I would choose CNN over News Channel 5 any day," she says.
As our interview came to a close she said how TV is very entertaining. "T.V. brings both positive and negative aspects to our society. If I want a good laugh, I'll turn on some kind of reality show and laugh! When I want to see the news, I'll just turn on CNN or FOX news. If I want to listen to music, I'll go to one of the music networks, BET, MTV, OR VH1 and listen to music. It is amazing to see how much T.V has changed through the years but one thing is missing out of all these channels...family oriented shows." After interviewing Tiff, I must say that I do agree with what she said. Everything on Television has become so provocative and sexual. What about family? Isn't that what matters the most? I'm not trying to be overly, sensitive or anything like that. I'm just reiterating what was said in the words of Tiffany.

Not A Country Station In Sight...

And the top Radio Stations in Nashville are (drum role sound effects):#1WJXA Mixed 92.9, #2WJFX 104.5 The Zone, and #3 WNRQ 105.1 The Rock! Have you noticed??? Not a country station in sight...well at least not in the top 3 popular stations of Nashville. It shows the variety of music Nashville has. Being a Nashville native, it often frustrates me that we as a city, Music City to be correct, only receives credit for one genre of music, country. So, yea, I did get a little excited when I saw that our favorite radio stations dose not include a country station. I know how diverse my city is, but try telling that to other people who perception of Nashville is pretty set and stone.:/
Mix 92.9- is a station that plays mostly adult contemporary music.
The Zone 104.5- is a talk show that concentrate on sports.
The Rock 105.1- plays classic rock music.
If I would have continued on with the list, some country stations would have followed immediately after The Rock. I believe that our stations in Nashville do a great job with converting to the advances of technology. You can access all of these stations online, leave comments, request songs, news update, and more. Radio is here to stay in my view.

Big Machine Records

Speaking that I am from "Music City," finding a recording label was no problem at all. I search but never found a R&B recording label in Nashville and maybe I didn't search hard enough. So I settle with what my city's known for; it's country music. My recording labels company name is Big Machine Records and it is home to many of country music's finest stars. Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, Steel Magnolia, Trish Yearwood, and more! Between you and me, the only country artist that I know from this company are Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts...but you catch my drift! These are big name people here!
Big Machine Records is an independent recording company that was established in 2005. The company mainly plays country music, however their music have crossed into many genres of music including pop and Adult Contemporary. They have won many awards such as the American Music Award, MTV Music Video Award, Academy of Country Awards, and Teen Choice Award. From the variety of awards they have won, tells me that their audience ranges from 16-mid 30's. I could be wrong, but it's a lucky guess.
It was very hard to get a representative from the label to the phone, however, much of the information about the label, are included on their website. There you would find a brief history of the label and its many featured artist. When you click on "Media" you will find that they advertise their artist greatly on the website. Similar to I-Tunes, they allow you to purchase the song or Cd for a set amount. Other ways they distribute their music are concerts. On the website they give updates of when and where they will be performing.
Yep, my record label has it all! The fame (meaning it's well known artists)fortune, awards, and great business strategy. If their was a problem with that faces the company, I sure enough don't see it. They are Big Machine Records doing BIG things!

Cookie Problem

After a very long process of trying to figure out this cookie thing, I finally made some process. I set my settings to where no cookies could be access at all which and personally I could not figure out what the problem was. I still had access to my everyday routine websites I go on. Facebook, Yahoo, CNN, ESPN, and Youtube I could all get on with no problem. It did not affect my computer websites in any way possible. I read some of the other blogs, and I heard of the struggles they were having. So I started asking myself why wasn't I having those same problems. To make sure that I was doing everything correctly, I called up my cousin, who is a computer wiz, and he said that I did everything correctly. So this brings me to my next question, did I solve the cookie problem? I have no idea. Does anybody have any suggestions of what might have went wrong? The way I see it, everything went right for me...hmmm.

The Challenge!

It was a miserable 5 hours! I say only 5 hours because that's all I spent not using any form of media. Five whole hours of no television, radio, INTERNET, and CELLPHONE!!! The challenge was to avoid any form of media for a full 12 hours as instructed by my professor. However, I only managed five hours sad to say...So what did I do to entertain myself? After a two in half hour nap and a hour or so of me playing with my hair, I've came to the conclusion that this was not going to work out for me. One thing that I cannot go without is my cellphone. I don't get a lot of calls throughout the day but text messages are vital to me. A lot of my family and friends call or text message letting me know what's going on. With me having a little sister who I must care for every afternoon, and a overbearing father who calls me every hour to make sure her needs are met; the phone, was the first challenge that could not be met. The next was the internet. Mostly everything that I need is on here. Bank statements, email, news, T.V. episodes, and social networks. I did get on the computer to finish up assignments for my class but usually I go on Facebook for a well deserve break or Youtube to listen to music. After finishing my work on the computer this challenge was left unmet as well. The easiest was the newspaper. I rarely read the newspaper seeing that most of the news is on the internet. That form of media was no problem.
What I have found out is that I use the phone and internet more than any other media source. I can do without TV, newspapers, and books because they can all be found on the internet. This short lived experience did not open too many more possibilities for me. I have become too involved with my everyday media routine. Maybe one day I will not turn to these forms of media for relief. But as of right now, I will just stick to what I know best. :)
